World Water Day 2018: Nature for Water
"Water! water everywhere, nor a drop to drink," great mind Corelidge expressed his fear long ago in his famous poetry "Rhyme of Ancient Mariner" but he possibly could not imagine how his fear would be projected upon the modern time. Water is life, water influences economy, public health, international affairs, and as experts predict, conflicts endangering future will evolve around water related issues.
To evaluate the water shaped human life and to raise awareness about ensuring safe water, "World Water Day" is coordinated by UN - water and this year 22nd March will be celebrated as the 25th year of excellence. This year the theme is "Nature for Water" to encompass issues like how we can use nature to overcome the water challenges of the 21st century. Environmental degradation, accompanied by global warming is making the already deteriorated water condition more severe. Degraded vegetation, polluted soil and air are risk factors for water. Besides, hampered ecosystems also hinder natural purification of water.
To voice sustainable solution, water scientists seek redemption within the realm of nature - as mass forestation, transforming grey infrastructure to green infrastructure. 6th goal of SDG is ensuring availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all by 2030. But the alarming news is that more than 80% of waste water flows back into present ecosystem without proper treatment. According to UN-water 1.8 billion people worldwide use contaminated water to drink.
The promise of "World Water Day" 2018 is to ensure safe water by ensuring favorable natural environment and to find a solution in green. Strategy for Environmental Development Foundation (#SED_Foundation) along with other Government and Non-government organizations celebrate the World Water Day with many programs.
